Gaja Ca'Marcanda promis 2020
Promis is a wonderfully ripe, creamy and soft wine with fused vanilla notes due to its subtle wood aging. The wine is bursting with black fruit with sweet blackberries and blueberries and is also recommended when drunk young due to its medium-bodied structure.
Promis is Gaja's “young vine wine” from the loamy and clay-rich areas of the Ca'Marcanda vineyards. The wine is composed of merlot, syrah and sangiovese (55%, 35% and 10% respectively), each fermented separately in stainless steel tanks over two weeks.
After the lactic acid fermentation is completed, the three young wines are mixed and
aged for eighteen months in old barriques. After bottling, the bottles remain in the company's cellars for another six months before they find their way to Wijnbox.nl and many restaurants.

The history of Gaja begins in 1859, the year in which Giovanni Gaja, a local grape grower in Barbaresco, Piemonte, founded a small wine company under his own name. A generation later, it is Angelo, grandfather of the current owner, who continues to make wine with the same determination as his father. He is supported in this by Clotilde Rey, whom he marries in 1905. They teach their descendant Giovanni – named after his grandfather – that as a winemaker you should not make any concessions: nothing should be at the expense of the quality of the wine.
In 1961, Giovanni's son Angelo joins the family business. After studying economics at the University of Turin and graduating from the School of Viticulture & Oenology in Alba, young Angelo went abroad for internships at wineries in Bordeaux, Burgundy, along the Rhine and in California. Full of fresh ideas, he had returned to his native Piedmont.
When Angelo Gaja takes over his parents' business in 1970, he asks his former classmate Guido Rivella to assist him. Together they implement a number of very revolutionary changes for the region. For example, they sometimes reduce the yields per hectare by up to half the number of permitted liters, they experiment with vinification methods, new - both red and white - grape varieties and ripening techniques. The results are amazing; the wines of Gaja are getting better and better.
As a proponent of a dynamic, purely quality-oriented wine-growing culture, the brilliant winemaker decided from 1996 to break with the Italian system of designations of origin that he considered too conservative and restrictive. Only the traditional house Barbaresco is still on the market as a prestigious DOCG. He deliberately 'downgrades' all other red single vineyard wines to regional Langhe Nebbiolo DOC. From that moment on, the label of his white toppers features Langhe DOC. Not the abbreviation guarantees good quality, but the name of the producer: Gaja.
In the Maremma region near Bolgheri within the municipality of Castagneto Carducci, in 1996 Angelo Gaja finally became the owner of another property in Tuscany: the Ca'Marcanda. The name of his latest project refers in the local dialect to Angelo's endless negotiations before he could buy this piece of land.
Until the 1930s, this region was a predominantly marshy area with no viticulture. But after it was discovered that the soil and climate here are very suitable for the cultivation of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc and syrah, in particular, more and more wine companies settled in the area.
Because Bolgheri has no wine tradition, producers enjoy a high degree of freedom to do what they want. In this way, wines could be produced in the style of red Bordeaux, the region that, due to its location and climate, largely served as a model for many Italian wines in the Bolgheri area.
In addition, a single wine producer also planted the autochthonous sangiovese. In this way, mainly 'international' wines were created by assembling, but with an Italian accent. Angelo Gaja also belongs to the select group of leading winemakers engaged in the production of this new type of Italian wine. And successfully witness Promis, Magari and Camarcanda.
